Mdumbi Backpackers is a business full of heart. It is an important part of the community. They strive to promote community involvement in sustainable eco-tourism. Mdumbi has a unique ownership model, with the local employees, the community association, and TransCape (Mdumbi’s affiliated NPO) all holding shares in the business.
In order to promote local ownership, Mdumbi Backpackers supports staff members in running their own personal businesses. From Mama Nowethu’s bread to Mama Nosekile’s laundry service, you can be sure that your money goes to the right place. They were honoured by the World Responsible Tourism Awards in 2016 and won the silver prize for “best for poverty reduction”.
Mdumbi Backpackers is closely involved with the community and helped to establish TransCape, a nonprofit that aims to tackle the significant education, health and socio-economic problems in the community by providing access to resources necessary for a change towards a better quality of life. Mdumbi Backpackers is proud to support the Mdumbi Education Center and other TransCape projects. Guests are welcome to visit our projects.
